Profile

John Richardson’s main research interests are concerned with the relationship between students’ perceptions of their courses of study in higher education and the approaches to studying that they adopt on those courses. He is also responsible for institutional research on the evaluation of both courses and programmes of study at the Open University. In 2003-2005 he was part of a team based at the Open University that was carrying out a pilot study for HEFCE towards the National Student Survey. For the last few years he has been carrying out a new lines of research on the role of ethnicity and disability as predictors of academic attainment in higher education.

Qualifications

B.A. (Hons.), D.Phil., C.Psychol.

Teaching Interests

I am currently engaged in statistical analyses of Open University data and national data (obtained from HESA) on the attainment of ethnic minority students and students with disabilities, together with surveys of current students. I am responsible for teaching two modules on quantitative research methods on the MRes programme for research students. I have also been collaborating with other colleagues in IET and in the Scottish region on a project concerned with “Promoting Effective Tutoring”. I am the course chair for H810 Accessible Online Learning for Students with Disabilities, I am a member of the course team for H809 Practice-Based Research in Educational Technology, and I am the IET representative on the course team for D845 Research Methods Dissertation in the Social Sciences.
