Director of IET Prof Denise Whitelock reflects on the REF 2021 results

The Jennie Lee Building

REF 2021 recognises 82% of OU research impact as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent'.

Reflecting on the REF 2021 results, Professor Denise Whitelock, Director of IET, comments:

Dear Colleagues,

The Open University received the results of the Research Excellence Framework 21 (REF 21) on 12 May 2022.

The Institute of Educational Technology (IET) staff contributed to the University’s submission through their publications, research income and student supervision. Impact case studies were also a compulsory requirement of the REF and IET colleagues provided two of the eight case studies for the Education Unit of Assessment (UOA).

With the UOA almost doubling in size, the Education submission has achieved a position of 2 in terms of Research Power maintaining its good performance achieved in REF 2014.

This link provides more information on the REF results.

There will be a more detailed analysis of the results in the months to come and we will follow up with highlights from our research achievements.

As Director, I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to everyone involved.

Professor Denise Whitelock

Director, IET
