A dashboard providing access to descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics for students such as VLE engagement, likelihood of passing the next assignment and study material recommendations.
Overview
The dashboard was co-designed with 30 OU students and tested with more than 300 students over a period of two years. It builds on the success of the OU’s tutor facing dashboard, the Early Alerts Indicator Dashboard.
The role of IET
IET led the co-design and evaluation of the tool with OU students, using a mixed-methods research approach.
Impact
Using a propensity score matching approach, it was shown that students who engaged with the dashboard have better course performance than those who did not engage with it. Analysis of surveys and interviews revealed benefits not currently available for OU students:
- A way to connect with studies.
- Understand study behaviour.
- Understand what students need to do to succeed.
- The reward badges offer positive reinforcement of effective study behaviours.
