The Open University’s CALRG (Computers and Learning Research Group) celebrates and promotes the use of technologies in education.

CALRG was founded in 1978 and is one of the UK’s leading and longest-running research groups in educational technology. CALRG is a group of researchers and students from across The Open University who are interested in educational technology. CALRG has interest and expertise in a wide variety of topics, including learning-at-scale, MOOCs, citizen science, mobile learning, distance learning, learning experience and accessibility, learning design, learning analytics, computer-supported collaborative learning, and open-world learning.

All research-active members of IET, whether students or staff, automatically become members of CALRG. The group is also joined by staff and students from across the OU who are interested in educational technology. The CALRG alumni include many distinguished academics, researchers, and learning professionals.

The research group organise weekly meetings on Thursday mornings, hosting seminars where speakers from CALRG, the OU, and outside of the university can present their work and engage in lively discussions with attendees. The group also organise interactive drop-in sessions for CALRG members to chat over coffee, cake and socialise.

CALRG also hold an annual conference during the summer, primarily focusing on research conducted by members, along with esteemed external keynotes, many of whom are CALRG alumni. Since 2020, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the group have successfully moved weekly meetings, seminars and the annual conference online, continuing efforts to create a vibrant research culture in educational technology which reaches audiences outside of the OU.
